Local Guard division takes command in Iraq

National Guard's first combat zone command since Korean War

NORTH GREENBUSH, Feb. 14
By DAN BAZILE

Army National Guard officers from the 42nd Rainbow Division based in Troy are now commanding a large number of troops in Iraq.  It's the first time the National Guard is taking responsibility in a combat zone since the Korean War. In a ceremony Monday Maj. Gen. Joseph Taluto took command from the 1st Infantry Division. His wife, Susan Taluto, says her husband received the phone call about the changeover a year ago Monday.“So we’ve had a lot time to get used to it.  They mobilized in May at Fort Drum, a large number of them, and gradually traveled forward to Kuwait and then to Iraq.  So today is the day of the formal transfer of authority and we’re ready,” Mrs. Taluto said.Maj. Gen. Taluto will have about 20,000 soldiers under his command.  Many of them are active duty soldiers.

"HOME SWEET HOME"

"A CHU is a CONNEX (shipping container), divided in half.  There is a door and a window in each side (about 9' x 15')….. Most have a bed, wardrobe cabinet, refrigerator, television and stand.  My predecessor is leaving a coffee maker, carpet, desk, speakers, clothes rack, and various other accoutrements, that he has added to make it more comfortable.  Unfortunately his microwave bit the dust, so I will probably pick one up.  Each person adds something for the next person".
